Subject: Killed when starting modale dialog like pinentry
Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2023 18:01:34 +0100
[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:21.1.7-1devuan1
Severity: critical

I first thought, this bug is in the nvidia package and reported that bug
with 1032379 to debian.

But now I seen the bug on amd gpu system too.

If modale dialog like pinentry is started, X is immediately killed.

The last two lines in log file are:
[115522.739] (II) seatd_libseat fini
[115522.739] (II) Server terminated successfully (0). Closing log file.

So it looks like the seatd integration fails again.

Couldn't that seat stuff not be made optional? It already did made
troubles in the past and now that critical bug! And all for no valid
use.

Please take this seatd stuff out of X. I don't want another nonsense
daemon running on my systems.

How are you starting xorg? Display manager? startx from a console?

Can you please attach the full Xorg.log? If you are using a Display Manager it
should be /var/log/Xorg.N.log. If you are using startx it should be ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.N.log

Which pinentry package are you using?

Thanks.

/usr/bin/pinentry-qt

/usr/bin/pinentry-gtk-2 seems to not been able to trigger the bug.

That might be correct. It certainly isn't the libseat integration.
If you look, both logfiles have

seat-libseat: libseat integration requires -keeptty and -keeptty was not provided, disabling libseat integration

libseat integration is not used when xorg is invoked as root by display managers
such as wdm.

This is a cruft message that I will remove, but the libseat code has not been
used.

If you run it from an xterminal do you get anything on stdout? I suspect it is
producing a fatal exception in a library.

OK. But we need some sort of error message to get a hint of what is going on.

 ~/.xsession-errors
 /var/log/syslog
 What eveer wdm logs to?

I know you dpkg-divert some libraries. So does

 ldd $(which pinentry-qt)

show any libraries you don't expect in the ldconfig path?

Other things to consider:

 - When did it start happening?
 - What had you changed or updated immediately before that?
 - Do other qt appsplications misbehave?

I believe you. But I didn't see until now.

It is also not only pinentry than also the new folder dialog in geeqie
when moving files.

I even don't expect much from that client programms. The server is
crashing, not the client.

Earlier this day I seen the dialog coming up for a split second before X
is crashing.

wdm seems to be not involved. I have a .xsession-errors but there is
nothing in it... Syslog does also not show any useful thing.

In the last days. Cannot say when exactly as I often preseed gpg-agent
with pam. I don't need pinentry that much (but at least once a week so
count 7 days!)

> - What had you changed or updated immediately before that?

I update daily...

See appended log of upgrades of the nvidia system.

libx11 was there. Some libqt5 also. But as the problem also appears with
geeqie, which is gtk, I would not blame it.

As I don't use others... I don't know.

You have a very non-standard installation. Where are all the -dmoN versions of

None of those are standard Devuan or Debian packages

Can you reproduce this on a vanilla Devuan installation?

Also, I don't even see an xorg crash in the logs you sent -- it ends with
successful exit. However, bb|hcb suggested on irc:

<bb|hcb> I am just guessing - if the first X client exits - maybe the problem
is that there is no initial always on app started?

<bb|hcb> Something to try to rule what I said out is to add
e.g. "/usr/bin/xeyes -geometry 1x1+2000 &" to the session, so it gets started
 and stays...

Debian Multimedia... http://www.deb-multimedia.org/

I don't have ones.. But the packages are für multimedia stuff.

I also seen that. And that is what me makes to wonder.

No. That is not the case. My X sessions are often long running and in
case of the laptop also over many suspends. I often start and end
programs. Mostly xterm, zathura, firefox, Lehreroffice, minetest,
geeqie, ... (you see, many stuff)

Only some dialogs kill X. I found the pinentry-qt and the new folder
dialog of geeqie for now.

I made it to start pinentry in a xterm:
   ~> pinentry-qt
Loading the "qt_" catalog failed for locale QLocale(English, Latin, United States)
Loading the "qt_" catalog failed for locale QLocale(German, Latin, Germany)
Loading the "qtbase_" catalog failed for locale QLocale(German, Latin, Germany)
   OK Pleased to meet you
   GETPIN
Checking for Caps Lock not possible on unsupported platform: "xcb"
The X11 connection broke (error 1). Did the X11 server die?

So direct afer "GETPIN" the dialog is shown nd X crashes.

I studied the Xorg logs and had the following thoughts

both Xorg logs shows grief when a new monitor is connected

nvidia at about 1312258.437 and amd at about 117563.217

nvidia "survives" a long time (20h?), but with repeated hickups

amd doesn't show extended use but rather X goes down within 20 sec

I'm not sure how gpu memory is used or computed but I suppose one
possibility is that it's not enough for the 3840x2400 side monitor
(plus the 1920x1200 LCD)

possibly amd says it has 1Gb memory; nvidia appears to reserve 6GB

----

All that might suggest some underlying hardware issue(s) but evenso it
appears X terminates peacefully without any log line explaining why.

Perhaps a deeper code review is needed to trace what happens when a
functioning GPU "suddenly disappears".

Ralph.

I suspect this is caused by your third party version of ffmpeg and libffmpegthumbnailer4v5
installed a few days ago.

 2023-03-02 22:55:25 upgrade ffmpeg:amd64 10:5.1.2-dmo3 10:6.0-dmo2
 2023-03-02 22:55:30 upgrade libffmpegthumbnailer-dev:amd64 1:2.2.2+git20220218-dmo1 1:2.2.2+git20220218-dmo2
 2023-03-02 22:55:30 upgrade libffmpegthumbnailer4v5:amd64 1:2.2.2+git20220218-dmo1 1:2.2.2+git20220218-dmo2
 2023-03-02 22:55:35 upgrade libxine2-ffmpeg:amd64 1:1.2.13-dmo1 1:1.2.13-dmo2

Using apt depends --recursive --no-recommends --no-suggests, both geeqie and
pinentry-qt have a recursive dependency on ffmpeg and libffmpegthumbnailer4v5
(strangely!)

The changelog for the version you have installed says

ffmpegthumbnailer-dmo (1:2.2.2+git20220218-dmo2) unstable; urgency=medium

  * Build with ffmpeg 6.0

 -- Christian Marillat <marillat@deb-multimedia.org> Thu, 02 Mar 2023 08:26:42 +0100

But Debian and Devuan have

 ffmpeg | 7:5.1.2-3 | testing | source, amd64, arm64, armel, armhf, i386, mips64el, mipsel, ppc64el, s390x
 ffmpeg | 7:5.1.2-3 | unstable | source, amd64, arm64, armel, armhf, i386, mips64el, mipsel, ppc64el, s390x

So it is, perhaps, not surprising that you have breakage.

> Debian Multimedia... http://www.deb-multimedia.org/

Please note that Debian Multimedia is *not* affiliated or well integrated with
official Debian or Devuan. It would be worth you reading
https://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia/FAQ which explains some background.

In particular

 3. Common issues

3.1. A recent upgrade of ffmpeg/libav-related library packages
(e.g. libavcodec) has broken related software (e.g. Totem, MPlayer, VLC, Xine)
This is probably caused by unofficial packages from third-party repositories,
 e.g. 'deb-multimedia.org' (formerly 'debian-multimedia.org'). These packages
are known to not integrate well with other software packages in Debian and
 cause breakage regularly.

I suggest you install the standard version of libffmpegthumbnailer4v5:

 libffmpegthumbnailer4v5 | 2.2.2+git20220218+dfsg-1+b1 | testing | amd64, arm64, armel, armhf, i386, mips64el, mipsel, ppc64el, s390x
 libffmpegthumbnailer4v5 | 2.2.2+git20220218+dfsg-1+b1 | unstable | amd64, arm64, armel, armhf, i386, mips64el, mipsel, ppc64el, s390x

or indeed all of the -dmo packages and see if that helps.

DMO is notorious for breaking Debian and has been as far back as I can
remember. You can read past discussions about DMO on the Debian forum.
Nothing recent though. Guess Debian users have gotten smarter . . .

That might be but I have several questions/thoughts:
- That must not crash X. If it does, it is a bug in X
- The dialogs I described has not really to do with something that you
do with ffmpeg. In fact, mpv and others work well.
- That must not crash X

There is no evidence that X crashes. It exist successfully. I don't know why
and I can't reproduce it.

If you can show the error or provide a way to reproduce, please do. Until then,
I don't know what else we can do.

Sorry.

Apparently, "exiting" happens in the DoConfigure function which logs
to stderr rather than the log file. So you will need to arrange to
capture stderr for Xorg to get another lead to the exiting.

One way to do that is to (temporarily) move /usr/bin/Xorg to, say,
/usr/bin/Xorg.real, and write an executable text file as /usr/bin/Xorg
with the single 2 lines:
----
#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/Xorg.real $* 2> /tmp/X-stderr-$(date +%s).log
----

By that, any stderr output from Xorg.real will be written to the
special log files /tmp/X-stderr-*.log where the * part is a "Unix
epoch seconds" timestamp, which would be near in time to the creation
time of the associated Xorg.0.log file.

Ralph.

Hi,

I think, the bug can be reassignet to fvwm2.

I seen the following line in .xsession-errors. I did not see it bevore
as this file is removed with every login..
   fvwm2: ../../src/xcb_io.c:626: _XAllocID: Zusicherung »ret != inval_id« nicht erfüllt.

What I definitively can rule out is the dmo packages as I explicitly
installed the devuan packages for a test with the same result.

Regards

Well, maybe not in fvwm2 as that file is not part of fvwm.

A quick look shows quite a few recent similar reports in various unrelated
packages. So it may be caused by src:libx11 which produces libx11-xcb1.

Maybe you can add this information to #1032379 and reassign?

I can prove it. If I revert the last update of libx11-6, libx11-data and
libx11-xcb1, everything works correct again.

I would like too but I have no account there and without it seems that I
cannot see any issue.

I even don't believe it is upstream. I made a testbuild with both
relevant commits reverted and the bug is still there.

So I expect one of the patches that was dropped in 2:1.8.4-1 was NOT
fixed upstream.

I am not convinced. The resolution sounds like a work around inside of
fvwm but the bug is really in libX11.

True, it is ALSO a bug in fvwm. But this libX11 bug is still there and
caused by their incomplete and erroneous implementation of threaded
support.

It introduced trouble in the past and since then, they did not address
the real bugs but did some cosmetic changes. And if I remember correct,
there are other software that is affected by this bug too. Not only
fvwm. (But I do not remember, which.)
