Package: devuan-installer
I burned a DVD with the live image, but after the initial boot all happens
is messages that the files are being loaded, where if I press arrow or
return key, after loading, the highlighted line may change, but the
installer keeps recycling to the load step.
I have far more DVDs than USB sticks, but I found an unused one and that
booted to displaying the desktop.
I plugged a second monitor and now I have a Xfce bug to report. Perhaps
that is key to that Xfce focus problem. As for reportbug itself, that needs
work too, as I have already reported.

I assume you mean Refracta's Desktop Live rather than Minimal Live.
Reassigning.
fsmithred,
I hope I have understood the OP correctly. Please reassign if not.
Thanks
Mark

Mark,
We probably need a pseudopackage for desktop-live like there is for
minimal-live. It sounds like the problem is that the dvd won't boot.
The installer isn't running yet at that point.
Bud,
Which iso did you use? Are you booting uefi or legacy bios? What kind
of hardware is it, especially the graphics - intel, amd or nvidia?
FWIW I tried devuan_daedalus_5.0.0-rc1_amd64_desktop-live.iso copied
to usb with dd and it boots to desktop on a lenovo T450s in bios mode.
I can test uefi some time in the next 24 hours.
I can't test optical media at this time.

I burned the DVD and tried to boot on an external Samsung (SE-208) on a
Dell Precision M4600, 8GB main memory, i7-2820 (2.3 GHz), stock Intel
graphics (64MB). Legacy setting.
The internal DVD drive conked out as I went to do this testing. I have too
many other computers with running internal DVD drives if needed.
The DVD, and the drive, boot just fine to the main menu. It loads the
kernel and userland without prompting, if slower than from a USB stick. If
one presses the up/down arrow, after those loads, the focus shifts, at
which point the loading restarts.
The only difference with the process with the USB stick is it proceeds to
the standalone messages and then displays a desktop.
I could test optical media (;)) but the time to set up for debugging, alas,
not this month.

Did you boot uefi or legacy bios?

[Message part 1 (text/plain, inline)]
The first (and the second, read on) were (from memory) July 1, 2023. The
Dell is set to legacy (BIOS) booting. That DVD would boot, told me it would
load, but would not transfer control out of the initial menu (load, load,
load, diagnostics).
I put the iso into a USB stick (the only fresh one was 128GB) and that ran
- but one time. out of several, I encountered the same symptoms using the
USB SSD (one time only) and when I tried rebooting, the USB stick was not
recognized, until I shut down for a cold boot.
I put the July 8 2023 daedalus live installer onto a DVD, moved over the
fastest computer in my stable (AMD 12-core, 64GB RAM) and it ran just fine.
At least, it automatically loaded and started Linux and on to the desktop.
I think there is a condition where if the arrow keys are depressed while
the kernel or userland are being loaded, the initial boot menu will not
transfer execution even if 'Enter' is pressed.
However, earlier in the correspondence there was an intuitive musing that
the USB connection might be flaky and that could very well be the problem.
I will keep testing the live ISO, from time to time, to see if I can narrow
down how to invoke this bug.
