Dear Maintainer,

Please bring back the ability to start Install with speech synthesis by using s
<enter> in the devuan installer. The removal of this option has caused confusion as evidenced by discussions on the speakup mailing list which isn't currently archived.
Most users don't bother to look for BOOTHELP.txt on the install CD/DVD images. The change to the boot menu is also not documented in the Daedalus release notes, even though I provided text documenting the change during discussions on the DNG mailing list.
Bringing back s <enter> to start the install with speech synthesis also means this would remain constant if the boot menu were to change from what it is in Daedalus in the future.
I will be providing a URL to this bug report on the speakup list so that others
may share their thoughts on this issue.
Thank you for considering this important issue.

I just found out the speakup list is still being archived. Here's the

The Devuan installer ISO has a boot screen offering options 1-8, where
1-4 are without speech and 5-8 are the same options with speech. This
is a quite different boot menu system from the previous one where the
shortcut S selected something. Here the options are selected with
their numbers and unfortunately syslinux doesn't offer multiple
shortcuts for options which otherwise would have made it easy to also
select 5 by S.

For sure the boot screen layout could be documented more and at more
places. As far as I remember BOOTHELP.txt largely contains your
contributed text. It was stuffed into the media to ba immediately
available when inspecting it but, as you indicate, that will obviously
only be useful for people who pay attention.

Thank you for the feedback. I'm sure the new team will take it into
consideration for future installer ISO publishing.

regards,

Ralph.
