Subject: live-isos made with linux-libre i386 kernel fail to boot
Date: Tue, 27 May 2025 16:12:38 -0400
Package: mount
Version: 2.41-5devuan1

Excalibur live isos made with linux-libre i386 kernels (several 6.12 and
one 6.14) fail to boot and drop to initramfs prompt. Error messages say
that filesystem.squashfs can't be mounted.

Downgrading mount, fdisk, libfdisk1 and uuid-runtime to version
2.38.1-5+deb12u3devuan1 corrects the problem.

Screenshot of the error message in /boot.log is here:
https://get.refracta.org/files/misc/mount_squashfs_error_2025-05-25_18-00-38.png

short version:
"mount filesystem.squashfs: fsconfig() failed: unable to read
squashfs_super_block"

It looks like the loop module is missing; may need to be explicitly
included in /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and/or explicitly loaded
(with modprobe) in the early init scripting.

New libre kernel (6.15.0) with latest mount (2.41-5devuan1:i386) works
correctly. Whatever was the cause of the problem seems to be fixed. I'm
closing this bug report, and if the problem returns, I'll re-open it.
