running the command:

ls -t|more

on an EXFAT filesystem

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

ran

ls -t|strace more

and saw repeated output of the form:
poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=0, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=2, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}], 3, -1) = 1 ([{fd=0, revents=POLLIN}])

on an ext3 filesystem, the same command does not show repeated output
and pauses after the following output:

poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=0, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=2, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}], 3, -1) = 1 ([{fd=0, revents=POLLIN|POLLHUP}])
poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}, {fd=-1}, {fd=2, events=POLLIN|POLLERR|POLLHUP}], 3, -1

I think this is the same as #860 you reported a while ago. Merging.

Can you answer https://bugs.devuan.org/860#8

I don't have any new ideas and nothing has been reported in Debian's BTS that I
can see.
